Which baby play mat chemicals ranked highest for concern - product safety

Which compounds in baby play mats rank highest for health risk?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

A 2025 study ranked alpha-methylstyrene, formamide, and toluene among the higher-concern volatile chemicals found in foam play mats.

What's actually in it

Foam play mats are often made from EPE, XPE, PVC, or EVA foam. These soft mats can release volatile chemicals into the air near the floor.

Babies breathe close to the mat. They also touch and mouth the surface, so the material matters.

What the research says

A 2025 study in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety tested 34 children's play mats. The researchers screened the air above the mats and found 71 volatile substances.

They then ranked the chemicals by how often they appeared, their signal strength, and hazard concern. The higher-concern list included alpha-methylstyrene, formamide, and toluene. The study also found the material ranking was EPE, then XPE, then PVC, then EVA, from lower to higher volatile chemical concern.

For supervised floor time, a washable organic cotton blanket is a simpler surface than foam puzzle tiles. It is not the same as a padded mat, but it avoids the foam layer and plasticizers.
