Is oil of lemon eucalyptus a safe bug repellent for kids?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Use caution. CDC says oil of lemon eucalyptus and PMD are not for children under 3 years old.

What's actually in it

Oil of lemon eucalyptus is an EPA-registered repellent ingredient. It is often listed with PMD, short for para-menthane-diol.

The word eucalyptus can make it sound gentle. The label still matters. For young children, age limits matter more than the plant name.

What the research says

CDC mosquito guidance updated in 2026 lists oil of lemon eucalyptus and PMD as EPA-registered repellent ingredients, but says not to use products with oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD on children under 3 years old.

CDC also recommends loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts, pants, and mosquito netting for babies and children.

For children under 3, skip oil of lemon eucalyptus. Use clothing, netting, and screens first. For older kids, follow the product label and keep repellent off hands, eyes, mouth, cuts, and irritated skin.
