Is it safe to use soft silicone baby spoons with hot food?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Use with care

Use silicone baby spoons for warm food, not hot food straight from the pot or microwave.

What's actually in it

Soft baby spoons are often silicone because they feel gentle on gums. That does not make them the right tool for very hot food.

Baby food should be warm, not steaming. If the food is hot enough to burn your mouth, it is too hot for a baby and too hot for a silicone spoon.

What the research says

A 2025 Journal of Hazardous Materials study tested silicone bakeware, not baby spoons. It still matters because it showed cyclic siloxanes can move from silicone into fatty food simulant during high-heat baking at 177 C.

Practical takeaway: let food cool before feeding. Use wood or stainless steel for hot stirring. Replace silicone spoons that become sticky, cracked, strongly scented, or discolored.

Warm feeding is the use case. Hot cooking is not.

What to use instead

For hot stirring, use wood or stainless kitchen tools. Let baby food cool before silicone spoons touch it.
