Is it safe for kids to eat from melamine dinnerware daily?
Not for daily hot meals. Use melamine only for cold snacks, and do not microwave it.
What's actually in it
Melamine dinnerware is hard plastic made from melamine-formaldehyde resin. It is light and hard to break, so it is common in kids plates and bowls.
The problem is daily use with hot food. Hot pasta, soup, tomato sauce, and microwave heating are different from cold crackers on an intact plate.
What the research says
FDA guidance updated in 2017 says melamine did not migrate into most foods in its review, but measured migration did happen from 3 of 19 plates and cups into acidic food under high-heat test conditions. FDA also says food and drinks should not be heated on melamine dinnerware in microwave ovens.
A 2025 Food Chem X study tested bamboo-based food-contact articles, including plates and chopsticks, and found a wide mix of chemicals. One sample suspected of containing melamine had melamine and related compounds detected by LC-MS.
Use melamine only for occasional cold snacks if it is intact. For daily kids meals, choose porcelain, tempered glass, or stainless steel. Retire melamine when it is scratched, cloudy, or chipped.
