Is it safe to let a baby nap in a car seat for hours?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. A car seat is for travel, not long sleep after the ride is over.

What's actually in it

A baby car seat is made to protect a baby during travel. It is not a crib, bassinet, or play yard.

In a long nap, a baby can slump forward with the chin near the chest. Straps and padding can also hold the baby in one position for a long time. That is why the rule changes when the ride is over.

What the research says

NICHD Safe to Sleep guidance says not to use sitting devices, including car seats and strollers, as a baby's regular sleep area or for naps. If baby falls asleep in one, move them to a regular sleep space as soon as possible once you are out of the vehicle.

CDC safe-sleep guidance says babies should sleep on their backs on a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface, with soft bedding kept out.

If baby sleeps in the car, finish the trip. Once you arrive, move baby to a crib, bassinet, or play yard for longer sleep.
