Is it safe for babies to sleep on polyester crib sheets?

Based on 4 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Use Caution

Use caution. A fitted sheet is the only bedding baby needs, and breathable natural fibers are a better default than polyester.

Short answer

A polyester fitted crib sheet is not the biggest safe-sleep risk. Loose bedding, soft surfaces, and overheating matter more. Still, polyester is a plastic fiber. If you are choosing new sheets, pick cotton or bamboo muslin and keep the sleep space simple.

What the research says

NIH Safe to Sleep guidance says baby should sleep on a firm, flat surface covered only by a fitted sheet. NIH also lists overheating as a SIDS risk factor. A 2024 Environmental Pollution study found synthetic textiles, including polyester, release microplastic fibers during household washing. A 2025 Science of the Total Environment study found PFAS and organophosphate esters in children's textiles and showed sweat increased dermal transfer under its test conditions.

What to do at home

Use one snug fitted sheet. Skip loose blankets, pillows, bumpers, and quilts. If buying new, choose cotton or bamboo muslin sheets and wash them before use.

What to use instead

Shop bamboo muslin crib sheets for a simple fitted-sheet sleep setup.
