How Does Lead Hurt The Developing Brain?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Avoid

Lead can disrupt the signals young brains use to build connections. CDC says some toys and older consumer products can contain lead, so old painted or recalled items should be kept away from children.

What is the concern?

Lead is a heavy metal. For young children, the main sources are old paint, dust, soil, some water pipes, and some consumer products. Children are at higher risk because their brains are still building and because they put hands and objects in their mouths.

Lead exposure is not a shopping problem alone. If you suspect lead exposure, ask a pediatrician about a blood lead test. If you live in an older home, test paint, dust, soil, and water.

What the research says

A 2026 International Journal of Environmental Health Research systematic review found that lead disrupts synaptic signaling pathways in the developing brain. The review described effects on NMDA receptor function, brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling, Wnt, GABAergic, and dopaminergic pathways.

The CDC says lead can be found in some consumer products, including some imported toys, antique toys, toy jewelry, and older painted products. CDC guidance says children should not play with recalled toys, toys made before 2009, or vintage and antique products unless you know they are lead-free.

What this means at home

Start with the highest-risk sources: peeling paint in homes built before 1978, lead in water, contaminated soil, and recalled products. Keep old painted toys, toy jewelry, and antique items out of a child's mouth and play area.

When you replace mouthable toys, choose simple materials and avoid old painted or unknown products. New wood toys can be a practical swap, but product replacement does not replace home testing or medical advice.

What to use instead

If you are replacing old painted, vintage, or recalled toys, shop simple wood toys and still check recalls, age guidance, and product details.
