Are parabens and BPA linked with early breast development in girls?
Higher urinary methylparaben, ethylparaben, and BPA were linked with higher odds of premature breast development in one 2026 case-control study.
Where exposure can come from
Parabens are preservatives used in some lotions, shampoos, washes, and personal care products. BPA is a bisphenol used in some plastics and resins. Young children can be exposed through skin contact, food contact, and household dust.
What the research says
A 2026 study in J Clin Res Pediatr Endocrinol compared 90 girls with premature thelarche to 114 healthy controls in Iran. Premature thelarche means breast development before the usual age range.
Girls in the highest urinary quartile had higher odds of premature thelarche for methylparaben, with an odds ratio of 4.3, ethylparaben, with an odds ratio of 4.7, and BPA, with an odds ratio of 5.03. This study shows an association, not proof that one product causes early breast development.
What to do at home
Start with products used every day. Choose unscented, paraben-free washes and lotions when possible. Store food and drinks in glass or stainless steel instead of plastic, especially for warm foods.
