Can Plastic Food-Contact Chemicals Raise Allergy Or Asthma Concerns For Kids?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Use Caution

A 2026 birth-cohort study linked phthalate mixtures with non-atopic asthma, while BPA itself was not linked in the same direction. The honest action is reducing plastic food contact, not blaming one container.

What is the concern?

Plastic food-contact materials can contain or release endocrine-disrupting compounds, including BPA and phthalates. These chemicals are not only food-storage exposures, but food storage is one place families can make a simple swap.

The allergy question needs careful wording. The best source here does not show that BPA from one container triggers allergies in babies. It points more strongly toward phthalate mixtures and childhood asthma patterns.

What the research says

A 2025 Journal of Xenobiotics review found that compounds can migrate from plastic containers used for food and medicine. The review named phthalates and endocrine-disrupting compounds such as BPA among the most studied substances.

A 2026 Environmental Pollution analysis used 2 birth cohorts to study phthalates, bisphenols, and allergic outcomes. Prenatal and postnatal phthalate mixtures were associated with non-atopic asthma. Prenatal BPA was inversely associated with overall wheeze in this study, and there was little evidence for other allergic outcomes.

What this means at home

This does not prove that plastic food containers cause allergies. It does support lowering avoidable plastic food contact while researchers study phthalates, bisphenols, asthma, and allergy patterns.

Use glass containers for leftovers, baby food prep, and warm meals. Avoid microwaving food in plastic, and replace scratched plastic containers first.

What to use instead

Glass storage helps lower the amount of plastic touching food, especially for leftovers, snacks, and foods that may be warmed later.
