Can BPA from plastic food containers affect metabolism?
BPA can migrate from some plastic food containers. Reviews link BPA exposure with cardiometabolic disease signals, and a mouse study found BPA disrupted insulin signaling.
What we know
A 2025 Journal of Xenobiotics review found that compounds can migrate from plastic containers into food, including endocrine disruptors such as BPA.
A 2023 Journal of Xenobiotics review reported that most human BPA exposure comes from BPA-contaminated foods. It also reported positive associations between BPA levels and cardiometabolic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension.
A 2012 PLOS One mouse study found that short-term BPA treatment caused insulin resistance, increased glucose-stimulated insulin release, and slowed whole-body energy metabolism in adult male mice.
What this means for your family
This does not prove that one plastic container causes a metabolism problem. It does show that BPA is worth reducing where the swap is simple.
Food storage is one of the easiest places to start because glass and stainless steel work well for daily use.
Simple safer steps
Use glass containers for leftovers and warm food. Do not microwave food in plastic. Choose stainless steel or glass for packed snacks when you can.
