Can microplastics from food packaging worsen colitis?
Plastic food containers can release microplastics. A 2026 mouse study found polystyrene microplastics worsened existing colitis through gut bacteria changes, so glass storage is a smart swap.
What we know
A 2025 Food Chemistry study measured microplastics released from plastic food containers during rinsing and migration testing. The study found that food type, temperature, and longer contact time changed how much plastic moved out of containers.
A 2026 Journal of Hazardous Materials mouse study tested polystyrene microplastics and colitis. Microplastics did not directly cause colon inflammation in healthy mice. In mice with induced colitis, they worsened colitis by disrupting gut bacteria, butyrate, and PPAR gamma signaling.
What this means for your family
This does not prove that food packaging worsens human colitis. It does show a reason to lower plastic contact with food, especially for families already thinking about gut health.
Glass is an easy swap because it does not shed plastic into food.
Simple safer steps
Store leftovers in glass containers. Avoid heating food in plastic. Move takeout or packaged food into glass at home when it is practical.
