Are children’s toys made from flexible plastics safe if they contain phthalates?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studiesbaby
Verdict: Avoid

Avoid soft flexible plastic toys with known phthalates for babies and toddlers who mouth toys. PubMed studies show plasticizers can migrate from toy materials to saliva simulant, even though risk depends on the specific plasticizer and exposure level.

Short answer: Avoid soft flexible plastic toys with known phthalates for babies and toddlers who still mouth toys. This does not mean every flexible toy causes harm. It means the exposure path is real enough to choose simpler materials when the swap is easy.

What the research says

The 2022 Chemosphere study Migration of hazardous contaminants from WEEE contaminated polymeric toy material by mouthing. tested 12 parts from 9 toy samples in artificial saliva for 1 hour. It found migration of BPA, DEHP, DIBP, flame retardants, and other contaminants from recycled polymeric toy material.

The 2021 Talanta study Novel strategy for disposable pipette extraction (DPX): Low-cost Parallel-DPX for determination of phthalate migration from common plastic materials to saliva simulant with GC-MS. measured phthalate migration from common plastic materials, including children's toys, school supplies, dog toys, and oral-contact items. At least 1 phthalate was detected in 81% of samples.

What to do instead

Choose solid wood toys, washable cotton items, and hard durable materials from brands with clear testing. Remove soft plastic toys that are sticky, cracked, strongly scented, or frequently mouthed.

What to use instead

For nursery play, browse solid wood toy options instead of soft vinyl-like plastic toys that babies may mouth.
