Is it safe to microwave with a plastic lid on the bowl?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Avoid

Use a plate instead. A plastic lid can heat, trap steam, and drip back onto food.

What's actually in it

A plastic microwave lid sits above hot food and traps steam. Condensation can collect on the lid and drip back into the bowl. If the lid touches food, the contact is even more direct.

The lid may not be the same plastic as a microwave meal tray or storage tub. Still, it is plastic near hot food, steam, and microwave energy. That is enough reason to use a simpler cover.

What the research says

A 2023 study in Environ Sci Technol tested plastic containers and reusable food pouches. Microwave heating caused the highest microplastic and nanoplastic release among the tested use scenarios.

A 2026 study in Anal Chem measured volatile organic compounds and polypropylene nanoplastics released from polypropylene food containers during 180 seconds of microwave heating.

Use an inverted porcelain plate, a microwave-safe glass lid, or a plain paper towel for splatter. Vent the cover so steam can escape. Keep plastic lids for fridge storage, not reheating.

What to use instead

Shop porcelain dishes for reheating.
