Is it safe to eat cereal from a plastic-lined box every morning?
Use caution. Dry cereal is lower concern than oily or hot foods, but daily boxed cereal is still repeated plastic-liner contact.
What's actually in it
Most cereal boxes use an inner plastic liner to keep cereal dry and crisp. Cereal is dry, so this is a lower-concern food contact case than hot soup, oily snacks, or acidic drinks.
The real question is the daily habit. If your family eats cereal every morning, the same packaging choice repeats again and again.
What the research says
A 2021 FDA review in Food Addit Contam Part A found that migration into dry foods is often assumed to be low, but some studies found higher migration than expected. The review names temperature, humidity, packaging, food composition, particle size, and barrier layers as factors.
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater found plasticizers in 85% of analyzed foods and showed that exposure varies by food and packaging context.
Do not panic over a cereal box. For daily cereal, buy bulk oats or muesli when available, then store it in a glass jar at home. Keep cereal cool and dry, and do not pour hot food into the liner.
