Is it safe to drink from a garden hose in summer?

Based on 3 peer-reviewed studieshome
Verdict: Use Caution

Skip it. Use a drinking-water-safe container instead.

What to know

Try not to drink from a regular garden hose. This matters more in summer, when water can sit hot inside the hose.

If someone takes one sip, do not panic. But do not make it a habit. Let the hose run before outdoor use, and give kids drinking water from an indoor tap, filtered water, or a clean container made for drinking.

If you need outdoor drinking water, use a hose that is clearly marked safe for drinking water. Store it out of the sun, flush it before use, and replace it when it cracks or smells strong.

Why this matters

CDC says drinking water quality depends on the source and treatment. Harmful germs or chemicals in unsafe water can make people sick, and young children are more likely to get sick.

EPA says parts used for drinking water must meet lead-free limits. A regular garden hose is not always made for drinking water contact.

The better choice is easy: bring water outside in a glass jar, steel bottle, or other drinking-water-safe container.
