Is it safe to buy bread in a plastic bag?
Usually yes. Bread is cool and fairly dry, but a linen bag or bread box is better once it gets home.
What's actually in it
Most sandwich bread bags are thin polyethylene. Bread is cool, fairly dry, and usually eaten within days. Those details make it lower concern than hot soup, oily peanut butter, or acidic juice in plastic.
The bigger everyday issue is storage. Plastic keeps soft bread soft, but it traps moisture and can make crusty bread lose texture.
What the research says
A 2021 FDA review in Food Addit Contam Part A looked at migration of food-contact substances into dry foods. The review explains that migration into dry foods has often been assumed to be minimal, but some studies found higher migration than expected, depending on the packaging, food, temperature, humidity, and storage conditions.
A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater found plasticizers in 85% of analyzed foods and showed exposure depends on food type and packaging context.
Buying bread in a plastic bag is okay when that is the realistic option. At home, move crusty bread to a linen bag or bread box, and do not warm bread inside the plastic.
