Is glass milk cleaner than plastic-jug milk?
Usually yes for packaging contact. Glass avoids plastic contact, but milk quality still depends on freshness and handling.
What's actually in it
Glass milk bottles avoid the main plastic food-contact surface. Plastic jugs and cartons are lighter and cheaper, but they put milk against plastic packaging.
That does not mean every glass-bottled milk is better in every way. The dairy, freshness, refrigeration, and handling still matter. The packaging part is where glass has the clearer advantage.
What the research says
A 2025 study in Food Chem X tested packaged milk and baby bottles. BPA was detected in 12 of 23 milk samples across packaging types, including PET, polycarbonate, polyethylene, Tetra Pak, and Tetra Brick.
A 2025 study in Environ Monit Assess found microplastics in analyzed milk packaging samples and said contamination may happen during manufacturing or packaging.
Choose glass-bottled milk when it is available and affordable. If you buy plastic jugs, keep them cold, use them by the date, and avoid leaving milk sitting warm on the counter.
