Can Flame Retardants In House Dust Be Linked To Child Behavior?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Use Caution

A Canadian birth cohort linked some organophosphate ester flame retardants in house dust with higher odds of behavior scores in the clinical range at age 5.

What is the concern?

Organophosphate esters, often called OPEs, are used as flame retardants and plasticizers in some consumer materials. They can collect in house dust, where babies and young children can touch or swallow dust during normal play.

Furniture and mattresses are not the only possible sources. The honest action is broader: reduce dust, ask about added flame retardants when buying foam or soft goods, and choose simple materials when replacing items.

What the research says

A 2026 Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology nested study used data from the Canadian CHILD Birth Cohort. Researchers measured OPEs in house dust at 3 to 4 months postpartum and compared them with Child Behavior Checklist results at age 5.

The study found that higher dust levels of TCEP were linked with higher odds of Total and Externalizing behavior scores at or above the clinical cutoff. A Firemaster 550 component was linked with higher odds of Internalizing scores. The authors also found stronger associations among boys for some summed chlorinated OPE measures.

What this means at home

This study does not prove that one couch or mattress changes behavior. It does support reducing dust and asking better questions about flame retardants in soft household products.

Vacuum with a HEPA filter if you can, wet-dust often, wash hands before meals, and ask brands whether foam, furniture, mattresses, pillows, and blankets have added flame retardants.

What to use instead

When replacing soft home items, choose clear material descriptions and ask brands directly about added flame retardants for foam, furniture, and sleep products.
