Do methylparaben and propylparaben absorb through skin and show weak estrogenic activity?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Some Concern

Yes. A 2026 review found methylparaben and propylparaben can be absorbed and have weak estrogenic activity compared with natural hormones.

What is actually in it

Methylparaben and propylparaben are preservatives used in some cosmetics, personal care products, and medicines.

They help prevent bacteria and mold growth in water-based products like lotions, shampoos, and body washes.

What the research says

A 2026 review in Toxicol Ind Health evaluated evidence on dermal absorption, metabolism, systemic distribution, and estrogenic potential for methylparaben and propylparaben.

The review found that these parabens can be systemically absorbed. It also found weak estrogenic activity compared with the body's own hormones, based on receptor binding and experimental biological effects.

The authors did not say one shampoo or lotion use will harm you. Their conclusion was more measured: repeated exposure and cumulative effects need more study.

If you want to lower exposure, read labels and avoid products that list methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, or ethylparaben.
