Illustration for Can food packaging made from plant-based bioplastics also release harmful chemicals?

Do bioplastic containers shed microplastics like regular plastic?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Some Concern

Not automatically safer. A 2025 mouse study found PLA microplastics from biodegradable food containers affected gut bacteria and metabolism, and PLA caused more serious changes than polyethylene in that study.

What bioplastic means

Many compostable food containers are made from PLA, or polylactic acid. PLA often comes from corn starch or sugarcane. It is still a plastic, even when the starting material is plant-based.

Compostable also has limits. Many PLA containers need industrial composting conditions. In a home kitchen, they can still act like plastic food-contact items.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater exposed mice to polyethylene microplastics and PLA microplastics released from food containers for 4 weeks. Both types changed gut bacteria and metabolism.

The PLA group showed stronger changes in lipid metabolism and more serious liver and intestine damage than the polyethylene group in this animal study.

This does not prove that one compostable takeout box harms people. It does show that biodegradable plastic particles are not automatically harmless.

Safer next steps

Use glass containers for hot leftovers and reheating. Avoid pouring hot soup, coffee, or oily food into disposable plastic or compostable containers. If you need takeout, move food into glass when you get home.
