Can phthalates disrupt hormone signals?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieshome
Verdict: Use Caution

A 2026 study found DEHP and MEHP were higher in women with PCOS, and DEHP tracked with several hormone markers. This does not prove personal-care products or vinyl caused PCOS.

Short answer

Phthalates are a family of plasticizers and fragrance-related chemicals. DEHP and MEHP are 2 examples that researchers track in the body.

A 2026 BMC Endocrine Disorders study compared 90 women with PCOS with 70 controls. MEHP and DEHP levels were higher in the PCOS group. DEHP also had positive links with LH, the LH/FSH ratio, and estradiol.

What this does not prove

This study does not prove that one shampoo, cleaner, or vinyl item caused PCOS. It shows a hormone-related signal that deserves caution, especially for people already trying to lower endocrine-disrupting chemical exposure.

Where exposure can come from

A 2022 Environmental Research review found phthalates in food packaging, household cleaners, cosmetics, fragrances, and personal-care products. It reported the strongest personal-care link between MEP and perfumes or fragrance-containing products such as shampoos, lotions, and hair products.

Start with products you use often. Choose fewer fragranced items. Replace vinyl items when a good material swap exists. Do not panic about everything at once.
