Can DEHP and DiNP affect hormone signals?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Use Caution

A mouse study found DEHP and DiNP changed pituitary hormone and inflammation markers. It does not prove high-heat vinyl or personal-care exposure disrupts hormones in people.

Short answer

Animal research shows hormone-signal changes after DEHP and DiNP exposure. The source does not prove that one vinyl product or personal-care item disrupts hormone balance in people, and it is not a high-heat study.

What the research found

A 2026 study in Toxicological Sciences gave adult female mice DEHP and DiNP for 10 days. Acute exposure did not change Fshb or Lhb mRNA compared with controls, but both phthalates reduced FSH-positive pituitary cell number and shifted inflammatory markers.

At 15 months after dosing, DiNP changed several pituitary markers, including higher Lhb and Il1b mRNA and lower Fshb and Nlrp3 mRNA. Cell culture work also showed that the DEHP metabolite MEHP reduced Fshb mRNA.

What to do at home

Reduce easy phthalate sources first. Avoid DEHP, DiNP, DBP, DEP, and vague fragrance or parfum when a clearer product fits. Skip soft PVC or vinyl when wood, cotton, glass, or stainless steel can do the job.

What to use instead

For home and personal-care swaps, avoid DEHP, DiNP, DBP, DEP, and vague fragrance or parfum when a clearer option fits.
