Can phthalate in vinyl toys lower birth weight?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Use Caution

Plastic toys can contain phthalates, and a 2024 meta-analysis found mixed birth-weight results with some sex and subgroup links. This does not prove one vinyl toy lowers birth weight.

What's actually in it

Soft vinyl toys are usually made from PVC. PVC often needs plasticizers to make it flexible. Some plasticizers are phthalates.

Pregnancy exposure does not come from one toy alone. It can come from many plastic products, dust, food packaging, and indoor materials.

What the research says

A 2022 International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health study measured phthalates in artificial products from kindergarten classrooms, including plastic toys. DEHP was the most common phthalate in the tested materials.

A 2024 Reproductive Toxicology meta-analysis found no overall significant association between mixed prenatal phthalate exposure and birth weight. In subgroup results, high-molecular-weight phthalates and MMP were linked with lower birth weight in female offspring, and DEHP was linked with lower birth weight in one correction group.

This does not prove one vinyl toy lowers birth weight. It does support choosing simpler wooden toys for babies and toddlers, especially for toys that go in the mouth.
