Can PFAS exposure be linked with heart rhythm changes in older adults?
caution
What PFAS are
PFAS are persistent chemicals used in some coatings, food packaging, stain-resistant treatments, and contaminated water supplies.
PFAS exposure is not only a kitchen issue, but the kitchen is one place where families can make practical swaps.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environmental Science & Technology studied 3,450 adults age 60 and older. Higher serum PFAS levels were linked with greater odds of minor and major ECG abnormalities.
The study also found PFAS burden linked with changes in QRS duration, QTc, and T-wave duration. These are measures of heart electrical timing. The study found associations. It did not prove PFAS caused an abnormal heart rhythm in any one person.
What to do at home
You can reduce extra PFAS contact from daily kitchen products. Choose uncoated serving and storage materials such as glass, porcelain, stainless steel, wood, and bamboo. Limit grease-resistant takeout packaging when you have an easy alternative.
