Can disposable plastic cup leachates worsen alcohol-related brain effects?
In rats, yes. A 2026 study found alcohol leachates from disposable cups worsened brain changes tied to learning and memory.
What is actually in it
Disposable plastic cups can release tiny amounts of plastic-related chemicals into drinks. Alcohol can pull out more chemicals than water because it acts like a solvent.
This matters most when drinks sit in plastic cups for a while. Heat, time, and alcohol all make leaching more likely.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environ Res tested alcohol leachates from disposable cups in male rats. Rats given the leachates every 48 hours for 8 weeks had hippocampal changes, blood-brain barrier disruption, and cognitive-performance changes.
The study did not test people drinking from one party cup. It does support a simple swap: use glass cups when serving alcohol, especially for drinks that sit out.
