Can BPA and other bisphenols raise fertility and hormone cancer concerns?
caution
What is actually in it
Bisphenols are a family of chemicals used in some hard plastics, can linings, and thermal receipt paper. BPA is the best known. Similar chemicals include BPS and BPF.
BPA-free does not always mean bisphenol-free. A product can replace BPA with another bisphenol that still interacts with hormone systems.
What the research says
A 2026 review in Endocrine summarized evidence on BPA, BPA analogues, female infertility, and hormone-related cancers.
The review explains that bisphenols can interfere with estrogen receptors. Estrogen signaling matters for ovary function, uterine function, breast tissue, and endometrial tissue. The review also notes reports that BPA analogues such as BPS and BPF can affect the endocrine system because their structures are similar to BPA.
This does not prove that one container causes infertility or cancer. It does support reducing repeated food contact with bisphenol-containing plastics. Glass, stainless steel, ceramic, and wood are better everyday kitchen materials when they fit the job.
