Can bedroom light at night affect puberty timing?
Use caution. A 2026 2-year study found that brighter bedroom light at night was linked with earlier pubertal onset in boys and girls. A darker bedroom is a low-risk sleep habit, especially after bedtime.
What's actually in it
Light at night can come from lamps, hallway light, streetlights, night-lights, TVs, tablets, and phones. The concern is light reaching the eyes after bedtime.
Darkness helps the body keep a normal sleep rhythm. Light at night can disrupt that rhythm.
What the research says
A 2026 study in J Clin Endocrinol Metab followed 886 children ages 6 to 10 for 2 years. Researchers measured bedroom light at night for 2 nights, then tracked puberty signs every 6 months.
Children in the highest bedroom light group started puberty earlier than children in the lowest light group: 3.84 months earlier in boys and 4.12 months earlier in girls. Each 30-minute increase in light exposure at or above 3 lux was linked with higher risk of earlier testicular development in boys and earlier breast development in girls.
What to do at home
This does not prove that one night-light causes early puberty. It does support a darker sleep space. Dim lights before bed, keep screens out of the bedroom when possible, close curtains, and use a comfortable sleep mask for children who can use one safely.
