Are natural fiber dish brushes a real upgrade?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Better Swap

Yes, when the bristles are plant fiber and the handle is wood or stainless steel.

What to know

A natural fiber dish brush can be a real upgrade over plastic bristles. Look for tampico, agave, coconut fiber, or other plant-based bristles with a wood or stainless steel handle.

The benefit is simple: less plastic scraping against plates, pans, and hot water. You still need basic care. Rinse the brush, shake out water, and let it dry with the bristles exposed to air.

Replace the head when bristles flatten, smell bad, shed, or stop rinsing clean. If a brush has nylon bristles, it is still a plastic-bristle brush.

What the research says

A 2023 Environ Sci Pollut Res Int study found that household dishwashing can release microplastics, and release rose during longer, hotter washing. A 2024 Environ Sci Technol study found that abrasive synthetic cleaning sponges can release microplastic fibers during wear.

These papers do not test every dish brush. They support the material logic: repeated hot scrubbing is a smart place to reduce plastic contact.
