Are melamine dishes safe to heat in the microwave?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Avoid

No. Heat can increase migration from melamine-formaldehyde dishes. Use glass or porcelain for hot food.

What's actually in it

Melamine dishes are made with melamine-formaldehyde resin. Many bamboo-look plates and kids' dishes use this same resin with bamboo or wheat-straw filler.

These dishes can be fine for cold, dry snacks. They are a bad fit for the microwave, hot soup, oatmeal, or acidic foods.

What the research says

A 2014 study in Food Additives & Contaminants tested melamine-formaldehyde tableware after repeated microwave heating. Overall migration increased with more heat and wash cycles, and the study called repeated 1 to 2 minute microwave heating a concern for consumer health.

A 2024 study in Toxics tested melamine, bamboo, and wheat-straw tableware. It found melamine and related compounds migrated into food simulants. Bamboo-made tableware had higher total migration than melamine-only and wheat-straw items, while glass and ceramic controls were much lower.

Do not microwave melamine dishes. Use porcelain, ceramic, or glass for reheating and hot meals. Save melamine for cold snacks away from heat.
