Are bamboo steamers safer than silicone ones?

Based on 2 peer-reviewed studieskitchen
Verdict: Safer

Usually yes. Plain bamboo is the simpler daily steamer, while silicone deserves more caution with repeated heat.

What's actually in it

A bamboo steamer is woven bamboo used above boiling water. A silicone steamer basket is flexible polymer cookware used in hot steam.

Both can be useful. For daily steaming, plain unfinished bamboo is the simpler material story. Check that it smells like wood, not glue or lacquer, and dry it fully after washing.

What the research says

A 2025 study in J Hazard Mater found silicone bakeware released cyclic siloxanes into a fatty food simulant and indoor air during baking. Young children had the highest estimated exposure by body weight.

A 2026 study in Foods tested 30 silicone food-contact materials and found migration of 35 siloxanes under worst-case intended-use scenarios. Several samples exceeded proposed total cyclic siloxane action limits.

Those studies do not test a bamboo steamer or your exact silicone basket. They do support choosing bamboo or stainless steel for daily steaming, and saving silicone for occasional use.
