Can chemicals in personal care products raise your cholesterol by disrupting thyroid hormones?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Caution

Possibly. A study found that higher exposure to chemicals from personal care products was linked to high cholesterol, with disrupted thyroid hormones as the connecting mechanism.

What's actually in it

Shampoos, lotions, deodorants, sunscreens, and toothpaste contain a cocktail of preservatives, UV filters, fragrances, and antimicrobials. Chemicals like parabens, triclosan, benzophenone, and phthalates are absorbed through your skin every day. They enter the bloodstream and interact with your endocrine system.

Your thyroid controls cholesterol metabolism. When thyroid hormones drop, cholesterol goes up. It's one of the first things doctors check when cholesterol is high for no obvious reason.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Res measured exposure to pharmaceutical and personal care product chemicals in a large population. The researchers then tracked who developed hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and triglycerides) and tested whether thyroid hormones explained the link.

Higher chemical exposure was linked to higher cholesterol risk. When the researchers tested the mechanism, they found thyroid hormone disruption was the bridge. The chemicals lowered thyroid hormone levels, and lower thyroid function led to higher cholesterol.

The thyroid-cholesterol connection is well-established in medicine. This study showed that everyday personal care chemicals can push that connection in a harmful direction, even in people with no history of thyroid disease.

Choosing personal care products with shorter ingredient lists and avoiding parabens, triclosan, and synthetic fragrances can help protect both your thyroid and your cholesterol levels.
