Can fragrance chemicals in laundry products and cleaners cause skin allergies?
Yes. A study confirmed that linalool, a common fragrance ingredient, breaks down into chemicals that cause verified allergic contact dermatitis after repeated exposure.
What's actually in it
Linalool is one of the most common fragrance chemicals in the world. It gives products their "fresh" or "floral" scent. You'll find it in laundry detergent, fabric softener, all-purpose cleaners, dish soap, air fresheners, and scented candles. When linalool is exposed to air, it breaks down into hydroperoxides, which are much more likely to cause allergic reactions than linalool itself.
You're exposed through skin contact with freshly washed clothes, sprayed surfaces, and even the air in a recently cleaned room.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Contact Dermatitis tested whether repeated exposure to linalool hydroperoxides causes true allergic contact dermatitis. The researchers used immunological verification to confirm the allergy, not just skin irritation.
After repeated exposure, the immune system began recognizing linalool's breakdown products as threats. Once sensitized, even small amounts of the chemical triggered an allergic skin reaction: redness, itching, swelling, and sometimes blistering.
The allergy was dose-dependent and cumulative. People who used more scented products over a longer time were more likely to develop the sensitivity. Once the allergy develops, it doesn't go away. You become reactive to linalool for life.
Switching to fragrance-free laundry detergent, cleaners, and personal care products is the simplest way to avoid this risk. If a product says "unscented," check the label: some still contain fragrances with masking agents.
