Is it safe for older adults to ignore heart rhythm risks from PFAS exposure?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studyhome
Verdict: Avoid

No. Serum PFAS correlate with electrocardiographic abnormalities in older adults.

What's actually in it

Older adults accumulate decades of PFAS exposure in their bodies. The chemicals persist because they don't efficiently excrete. New research shows associations between blood PFAS levels and electrocardiographic abnormalities. The effects include prolonged QT interval, increased arrhythmia risk, and ECG markers of cardiovascular stress.

For older adults with cardiovascular history, this adds to existing heart disease risk factors.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Sci Technol found associations of serum PFAS with electrocardiographic abnormalities in older adults and electrophysiological characterization. Higher PFAS correlated with worse ECG markers. The mechanism was confirmed through electrophysiology experiments.

For older adults, the PFAS reduction strategy: filtered tap water (NSF 53 for most PFAS or reverse osmosis for emerging ones), stainless steel or cast iron cookware instead of nonstick, skip fast food wrappers and PFAS-coated takeout, reduce fish frequency to a couple times a week. For heart-specific concerns, cardiology consultation for ECG baseline and regular monitoring is part of standard care; knowing about environmental inputs can inform the picture.
