Is it safe for kids with allergies to wear synthetic nap mats at daycare?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Avoid

No. Synthetic nap mats emit VOCs and microplastic that allergic kids react strongly to.

What's actually in it

Daycare nap mats are typically PVC vinyl covers over polyurethane foam, chosen for durability and easy cleaning. These materials emit phthalates, VOCs, and airborne microplastic into the breathing zone where a child's face rests. Allergic kids with asthma, eczema, or hay fever have amplified reactions to these exposures.

Daycare naps are 1-2 hours of direct face contact with the mat, 5 days a week.

What the research says

A 2026 study in Environ Int on plasticizers in kindergarten classrooms documented elevated levels from vinyl products including nap mats. A 2025 play mat VOC study also documented volatile emissions from similar materials. Allergic kids show worse symptom patterns with this exposure.

For daycare, bring a cotton fitted sheet from home to cover the nap mat. Washable organic cotton nap mat covers are available (Slumkins, small Etsy makers). Ask the daycare about bringing your own nap mat if allergies are severe. For kids with significant allergies, a HEPA air purifier in the main classroom helps overall air quality. Discuss the child's specific needs with the daycare director.
