Do plastic cups leach brain-damaging chemicals when you drink alcohol from them?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studykitchen
Verdict: Caution

Yes. A study found that alcohol dissolves chemicals from disposable plastic cups that act as neurotoxicants, impairing memory and learning pathways.

What's actually in it

Disposable plastic cups are the default at parties, barbecues, and events where alcohol is served. Alcohol is a powerful solvent. It pulls chemicals out of plastic much faster than water does. Beer, wine, cocktails, and spirits all extract additives from the cup material into your drink.

The warmer the drink and the longer it sits, the more chemicals dissolve. A cocktail sitting in a plastic cup in the sun at a backyard party is an especially potent combination.

What the research says

A 2026 study in J Hazard Mater tested what chemicals leach from disposable plastic cups when they hold alcohol. The researchers then exposed brain cells to these leachates and measured the damage.

The alcohol-plastic mixture contained chemicals that acted as neurotoxicants. They disrupted a specific brain pathway called mir-330-3p/Acsl1, which is involved in how brain cells process fats and maintain their membranes.

When this pathway was disrupted, cognitive performance dropped. The study showed measurable impairment in memory and learning functions. The chemicals didn't just irritate brain cells: they changed how the cells worked at a molecular level.

The dose mattered. More alcohol contact time and higher alcohol content meant more chemical leaching and worse brain cell damage.

Using glass, stainless steel, or ceramic cups for alcoholic drinks eliminates this risk entirely. If you're hosting a party, reusable cups are a safer choice for your guests.
