Can PFAS exposure before birth increase a child's risk of asthma and allergies?

Based on 1 peer-reviewed studybaby
Verdict: Caution

Possibly. A birth cohort study found that prenatal PFAS exposure was linked to higher rates of respiratory allergies in children.

What's actually in it

Pregnant women absorb PFAS from nonstick cookware, food packaging, stain-resistant textiles, and tap water. These chemicals cross the placenta and reach the developing baby. Because PFAS persist in the body for years, the baby is exposed throughout the entire pregnancy.

A child's immune system develops before and shortly after birth. Chemical interference during this window can shape how the immune system responds to allergens for years to come.

What the research says

A 2026 study from the Shanghai Birth Cohort Consortium measured PFAS in mothers' blood during pregnancy and then followed their children for several years. The researchers tracked which children developed respiratory allergic diseases like asthma, wheezing, and allergic rhinitis.

Children whose mothers had higher prenatal PFAS levels were more likely to develop these conditions. The link was found for multiple PFAS compounds, suggesting it's a class-wide effect rather than one specific chemical.

PFAS can skew the developing immune system toward overreaction. Instead of learning to ignore harmless substances like pollen or pet dander, the immune system treats them as threats. That overreaction shows up as allergies and asthma.

For expectant parents, reducing PFAS exposure before and during pregnancy gives the baby's immune system the best chance to develop normally. Stainless steel cookware, PFAS-free food wraps, and filtered water are practical starting points.
