Can even trace levels of PFAS in drinking water reduce cognitive function?
caution
What's actually in it
Tap water in many communities contains PFAS from industrial contamination, fire-fighting foam runoff, and wastewater treatment plants that can't fully remove these chemicals. Even water that meets current safety standards may contain trace levels of multiple PFAS compounds. You drink, cook with, and make coffee and tea from this water every day.
New EPA guidelines have set advisory levels as low as 4 parts per trillion for some PFAS, acknowledging that even tiny amounts matter.
What the research says
A 2026 study in Environ Health Perspect examined whether trace-level PFAS in drinking water affected cognitive function in the general population. The researchers measured PFAS in local water supplies and assessed residents' memory, attention, and processing speed.
People exposed to higher PFAS levels in their water, even at concentrations considered "low" by previous standards, showed lower scores on memory tests and slower processing speed. The effects were dose-dependent and became more pronounced with longer residence time in the affected area.
PFAS appeared to diminish cognitive function through thyroid hormone disruption and neuroinflammation. The brain depends on steady thyroid hormone levels for maintenance and repair throughout life. When PFAS interfere with this, brain performance gradually declines.
Install a home water filter rated for PFAS removal. Reverse osmosis and activated carbon systems are the most effective options. If you use well water, get it tested for PFAS. For daily drinking, filtered water in a glass or stainless steel bottle is the safest combination.
