Your nail polish label is lying

92% of the nail products tested in a 2026 study by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control contained at least one chemical that was completely missing from the ingredient label. Some products even contained unlisted ingredients at concentrations exceeding 10,000 μg/mL.

Researchers analyzed 178 products and found 29 different chemicals, 24 of which are flagged by health organizations as concerning. Despite marketing claims, even products specifically sold for children contained the same levels of hazardous ingredients as adult versions.

The hidden risks in your bottle

The study detected high levels of methyl methacrylate, formaldehyde, and toluene. While the risk might seem low if you paint your nails once in a while, the exposure for nail salon workers and frequent users is significantly higher. You are essentially trusting a label that has a near-total failure rate for accuracy.

If you are tired of playing guessing games with your health, it is time to stop relying on conventional brands that hide their formulas. You don't have to sacrifice your style to avoid these ingredients. We have vetted a range of non-toxic home alternatives that prioritize transparency and safety over chemical shortcuts. Check your labels, ditch the mystery bottles, and make the switch to products that actually tell you what is inside.
