Researchers tested tattoo inks sold in Australia and found toxic metals and carcinogens. These chemicals are being injected directly under people's skin.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study analyzed tattoo inks available on the Australian market and detected toxic metals and carcinogenic compounds. Heavy metals like lead, cadmium, chromium, and nickel were present. These are known to cause cancer, organ damage, and immune system problems.
Unlike chemicals you eat or breathe, tattoo ink is injected past all your body's natural barriers. It goes directly into the dermis, where it stays for life and slowly migrates to lymph nodes and other organs.
What You Can Do
Ask your tattoo artist for ink ingredient information. Look for inks that have been tested for heavy metals. Research brands before committing to a tattoo. If you already have tattoos, mention them during medical checkups.
