New evidence suggests tattoo ink may increase the risk of lymphoma and skin cancer. The chemicals in tattoo pigments don't just stay in the skin. They travel through your body.

What the Review Found

A 2026 narrative review compiled new evidence on the potential link between tattoo ink exposure and lymphoma and skin cancer. Tattoo inks contain heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and azo dyes. These chemicals are injected into the dermis and can migrate to lymph nodes and other organs.

Lymphoma risk may increase because tattoo pigment particles accumulate in the lymph nodes over time, causing chronic inflammation and immune disruption in these critical immune organs.

What You Can Do

If you're considering a tattoo, research the ink being used. Ask for ingredient lists. Choose tattoo artists who use cleaner pigments. If you have existing tattoos, monitor any changes in the skin or surrounding lymph nodes and mention your tattoos to your doctor during checkups.
