What the Review Found
A 2026 mini-review examined the potential connection between rising plastic pollution and schizophrenia onset. Microplastics and nanoplastics cause neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and disruption of neurotransmitter systems, all of which are involved in schizophrenia pathology.
Schizophrenia affects about 1% of the global population. While genetics plays a role, environmental factors are believed to trigger the disease in susceptible individuals. Plastic pollutants are a new candidate for those environmental triggers.
