"Eco-Friendly" PLA Plastic Drops Testosterone Levels

The "biodegradable" plastic in your compostable cup is aging the cells that make testosterone. And it's cutting sperm quality along with it.

PLA Microplastics Target Testosterone Production

Polylactic acid (PLA) is the poster child of eco-friendly plastic. A 2026 study in Environ Pollut exposed male mice to PLA microplastics and measured the damage. The results: decreased serum testosterone, reduced sperm quality, and premature aging of Leydig cells (the cells that produce testosterone).

How PLA Kills Testosterone

PLA microplastics shut down two critical cleanup systems inside Leydig cells: autophagy and mitophagy. These are the processes cells use to clear out damaged components and keep functioning.

When those systems stop working, the Leydig cells accumulate damage and enter senescence, a state where they're alive but no longer doing their job. Senescent Leydig cells can't make testosterone. They just sit there producing inflammatory signals.

The Good News: It's Reversible

When researchers re-activated autophagy and mitophagy, the Leydig cell senescence reversed. That means the damage pathway could potentially be interrupted. But you'd have to stop the PLA microplastic exposure first.

What This Means for "Green" Plastics

PLA breaks down into microplastics just like regular plastic. Those microplastics enter your body through food, water, and air. And now we know they target the cells responsible for male hormone production. "Biodegradable" on the label doesn't mean safe for your body.
