A meta-analysis of the research confirms: phthalates in your urine are associated with lower testosterone and disrupted reproductive hormones in adult men.
What the Study Found
A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis examined the link between urinary di-butyl phthalate levels and reproductive hormonal parameters in adult men. The dose-response analysis found that higher phthalate levels were associated with altered hormone profiles.
Phthalates are anti-androgens. They block testosterone's effects. When men have higher phthalate exposure, their hormonal balance shifts in ways that reduce sperm production and quality.
Where Men Get Phthalate Exposure
Personal care products (cologne, shampoo, aftershave), plastic food packaging, vinyl flooring, and fast food wrappers are all sources. Phthalates are listed under "fragrance" on product labels.
What You Can Do
Go fragrance-free. Avoid plastic food containers. Eat less fast food. Use glass and stainless steel. Read labels for phthalates, especially in grooming products.
