If you have prediabetes, the PFAS in your blood is making your heart risk even worse. A 21-year study puts numbers on the damage.
21 Years of Follow-Up
A 2026 study in J Am Heart Assoc tracked 1,382 adults with prediabetes from the Diabetes Prevention Program for a median of 21 years. They measured six PFAS compounds in baseline blood samples.
During follow-up, 9.6% had major adverse cardiovascular events and 3.9% died from cardiovascular disease.
PFAS Predicts Heart Events
Each interquartile increase in N-MeFOSAA (a PFAS compound) was linked to 16% higher risk of major cardiac events and 24% higher risk of cardiovascular death. PFOS, PFHxS, and PFOA were also linked to heart attacks, heart failure, and cardiovascular death.
Age, sex, diet, and exercise didn't change the associations. PFAS was an independent risk factor.
Why Prediabetics Are at Extra Risk
Prediabetes already stresses the cardiovascular system. PFAS adds inflammation, lipid disruption, and endothelial damage on top. The combination accelerates the path from metabolic dysfunction to heart disease.
What You Can Do
Filter your water for PFAS. Avoid nonstick cookware and grease-resistant food packaging. If you have prediabetes, reducing PFAS exposure should be part of your health strategy. And explore non-toxic home essentials for everyday PFAS-free alternatives.
