PFAS Exposure Makes Ovarian Cancer Resist Chemotherapy

Chronic PFAS exposure makes ovarian cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy. The longer the exposure, the worse chemo works. But there's a hopeful finding: removing PFAS can partially reverse the damage.

PFAS and Chemo Resistance

A 2026 study in Toxicol Lett exposed ovarian cancer cells to PFAS over extended periods and then tested how well chemotherapy drugs worked. In cells that were moderately sensitive to chemo, chronic PFAS exposure made them significantly more resistant. The longer the exposure, the worse the response.

PFAS also altered mitochondrial content and increased superoxide production in these cells. The mitochondria, the cell's energy factories, were rewired in ways that helped cancer cells survive treatment.

The Good News: Recovery Is Possible

When researchers removed PFAS and let the cells grow without it for several passages, chemo sensitivity came back. Superoxide production dropped. Mitochondrial content normalized. The cells became vulnerable to treatment again.

Not everything reversed. Cell proliferation stayed elevated. But the core chemo resistance did fade when PFAS exposure stopped.

What This Means for You

PFAS accumulates in the body over years from nonstick cookware, food packaging, contaminated water, and stain-resistant products. If you're exposed, it may be affecting how your body responds to cancer treatment. Reducing exposure matters, and the sooner the better.

Filter your water. Ditch nonstick pans and PFAS-coated products. Choose alternatives that don't contain forever chemicals. Start with non-toxic home essentials.
