PFAS Chemicals Are Triggering Gestational Diabetes

PFAS chemicals are messing with the liver pathways that control blood sugar during pregnancy, and it's leading to gestational diabetes.
What the Study Found
A 2026 nested case-control study in Scientific Reports found that PFAS disrupts PPARs and L-FABP, proteins that regulate fat metabolism and blood sugar. These disruptions mediate the link between PFAS exposure and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
PPARs are nuclear receptors that control how your body processes fats and sugars. L-FABP is a liver protein involved in fatty acid transport. When PFAS throws both of these off, blood sugar regulation falls apart during pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes Is Surging
GDM rates have been climbing for years. It affects up to 14% of pregnancies globally and increases the risk of complications for both mother and baby, including preeclampsia, C-section delivery, and the baby developing type 2 diabetes later in life.
PFAS exposure is nearly universal. If it's driving even a portion of GDM cases, that's a public health problem hiding in plain sight.
What You Can Do
Filter your water. Ditch nonstick pans. Avoid fast food packaging and microwave popcorn bags. Talk to your doctor about gestational diabetes screening, especially if you live in an area with known PFAS water contamination.
