The Hidden Risk in Your Makeup Bag
Your waterproof mascara and long-lasting foundation likely contain PFAS. A 2026 study published in Environmental Pollution analyzed 31 cosmetic products and found that PFAS forever chemicals are being used to force durability and water resistance onto your skin.
Researchers identified 15 different PFAS compounds in 30 of the 31 products tested. Concentrations reached as high as 263 ng/g. Most concerning, a lotion and a sunscreen tested in the study exceeded the acceptable daily intake dose for dermal exposure. If it claims to be sweatproof or long-lasting, the likelihood of finding these chemicals jumps significantly.
Why You Should Care
These chemicals do not break down. They accumulate in the body and are linked to significant health risks. We are essentially applying synthetic, persistent compounds to our skin every single morning under the guise of beauty and convenience. The industry knows that adding these substances makes products perform better, but they rarely disclose the presence of these specific, harmful additives.
How to Protect Your Skin
You do not have to sacrifice performance to stay safe. Start by ditching products that promise extreme wear or water resistance, as these are the most common offenders. Look for brands that provide third-party testing results rather than vague marketing claims.
We have done the legwork to vet safer options that don't rely on synthetic coatings. You can browse our non-toxic home alternatives to find personal care items that are free from these persistent chemicals. It is time to stop paying for products that compromise your health.
