The Data on PFAS and Pregnancy

A 2026 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found that PFAS exposure is linked to preterm birth risk. Researchers analyzed 1,990 mother-infant pairs and discovered that higher levels of these chemicals in umbilical cord serum significantly increase the likelihood of early delivery. The study identified PFTrDA as a major culprit, showing a 51% higher risk of preterm birth with each increase in exposure.

How PFAS Disrupts Development

The researchers didn't just find a correlation. They identified that PFAS exposure triggers specific metabolic disruptions, particularly in bile acid and lipid metabolism. These chemicals are not just sitting in the environment. They are actively interfering with the body's internal systems during pregnancy. When researchers looked at the combined effect of PFAS mixtures, they found a consistent, positive link to preterm outcomes.

Taking Control of Your Environment

You cannot control every chemical in the air or water, but you can control what you bring into your home. Start by auditing your kitchen and nursery for non-stick coatings, stain-resistant fabrics, and plastic food storage that may contain these compounds. Replacing these items with glass, stainless steel, or organic materials is a practical way to reduce your daily load. If you are preparing for a new arrival, focus on non-toxic baby alternatives that prioritize safety over convenience. Small, consistent swaps are the best way to limit your exposure.
