The Hidden Ingredient in Your Produce

Up to 99.5% of your daily intake of PFAS chemicals could be coming directly from the food on your plate. A 2026 review published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry confirms that food plants are the primary exposure route for these persistent synthetic compounds.

Researchers found that PFAS chemicals are absorbed by vegetables, fruits, and grains from contaminated soil and water. In the US and Australia, wheat products alone accounted for over 82% of the estimated daily intake of these chemicals. Because these substances accumulate in plant tissues, they aren't just sitting on the surface where a quick rinse can remove them. They are inside the food.

Taking Control of Your Kitchen

You cannot control the soil quality of every farm, but you can control the materials you use to store and prepare your food. Many conventional kitchen tools contain PFAS coatings that leach additional chemicals into your meals, compounding the exposure you are already getting from your groceries. Reducing your total chemical load starts with eliminating these unnecessary sources.

Switching to glass, stainless steel, or solid wood allows you to stop adding to the problem while you navigate the larger issue of food supply contamination. We have curated a selection of non-toxic kitchen alternatives to help you replace the plastic and coated gear that is currently sitting in your cabinets. Start by swapping your nonstick pans and plastic storage containers today.
