Microplastics don't just pass through your digestive system. They remodel your gut microbiome. The bacteria living in your intestines are being reshaped by the plastic you eat and drink.
What the Study Found
A 2026 study in Gut Microbes documented gut microbiome remodeling induced by microplastic exposure in humans. People exposed to higher levels of microplastics had measurably different gut bacteria populations.
Your gut microbiome controls digestion, immune function, vitamin production, and even mental health through the gut-brain axis. Remodeling it with plastic particles could have cascading effects throughout your body.
How Microplastics Get Into Your Gut
You swallow microplastics from drinking water, food packaging, seafood, salt, beer, honey, and even tea bags. Studies estimate the average person ingests a credit card's worth of plastic every week. The particles sit in your intestines, interact with bacteria, and change the ecosystem.
What You Can Do
Filter your water. Avoid plastic food packaging. Never heat food in plastic. Use glass, stainless steel, and ceramic. Support your gut health with fiber and fermented foods to help maintain bacterial balance.
